Holding Your Phone | The C List, Ep. 2
Vertical and horizontal orientations can both be valuable when shooting video. Choosing the right option depends on your setup and the goals you have for the finished video.
Many people in the digital media industry will tell you that horizontal is the only way to go, but vertical can be useful as well. If you’re shooting a single product or person, vertical works great. If you’re trying to capture multiple people and products, the horizontal view will work better. Horizontal also allows extra space for logos or text that you can add later on.
Keep in mind that we watch TV and movies in a horizontal view. Most people are more accustomed to this format, and it’s usually more pleasing to the eye.
If you’re sending footage to a TV station, they’ll likely prefer horizontal format rather than vertical; however, if your footage is truly phenomenal, they’ll use whatever format you give them.
